About Osteopathy
Osteopathy is a form of treatment that is completely hands-on. It is based on the understanding that the ability of the body to function depends upon its underlying structure. If there are restrictions in joint mobility, tight muscles and ligaments, or organs that are congested, the body is unable to function at its best. Osteopaths look at each person as an individual. Their sense of touch is highly developed and allows them to identify problem areas within the body.
They use a whole range of techniques when treating patients, including soft tissue massage, manipulation and articulation of joints, traction, muscle energy techniques, and very gentle cranial techniques which are used for adults and babies from birth onwards. These are particularly useful if a patient is too acute to tolerate manipulation.
For most problems that are not long-term we would expect to see a marked improvement within one to three sessions. Long-standing or chronic problems such as arthritis can be treated on a maintenance basis. Relief is provided, but due to the underlying change in structure symptoms may recur. Exercises are usually prescribed which can help build up muscle to support any underlying weaknesses and stretch out tight muscles. Some patients might experience a temporary soreness after treatment, but this normally settles down after a day or two to leave the patient feeling more comfortable.
